One evening. One thing you made.
Ceramics, printmaking and painting in a former textile workshop in Brașov. Eight seats, no experience needed. Pick a Tuesday evening or a Saturday and come.
Pick a workshop, book a seat, bring nothing
Every workshop is one session. There is no course to enrol in, no levels and no certificate: you sit down, you make one thing, you take it home.
Eight seats, one class at a time. There is one workshop room, so the calendar only ever shows what is genuinely free.
Wear something you do not mind losing. Everything else, clay, glaze, paper, ink, the block, the paint, is already in the price.
Ilinca runs the wheel and the handbuilding bench, Tudor runs the press and the paints, and they do not swap: Ilinca cannot draw and Tudor breaks pots.
Ilinca trained in ceramics in Cluj, then spent six years throwing the same mug shape a few hundred times a week in a production pottery, which is where the speed in her hands came from and also why she left. She opened the bench here in the spring of 2019.
Tudor painted signs, then spent eight years pulling proofs in a small commercial print shop in Brașov until it closed in 2017. The press in the studio came from there.

The studio and the courtyard
-
Through the arch off Strada Postăvarului, across the courtyard, past the linden. First-time visitors usually walk straight past it. -
The wheels sit along the north-facing windows, chosen because the light never changes. -
Tudor's press came from a print shop that closed in 2017. Prints and blocks go home the same evening. -
A former textile workshop: high ceiling, the original concrete floor, the drain still in it. -
The kiln has a room of its own and its own fuse. Firing and glazing are already in the price of every ceramics seat.

Questions
-
Do I need experience?
No. Every workshop welcomes complete beginners; most people who book have never touched a wheel, a block or a brush before.
-
What do I wear?
Something you do not mind losing. Clay rinses out of cotton but not out of good wool, and ink does not come out of much at all.
-
Do I get to keep what I make?
Yes. Prints and watercolours go home with you the same evening. Anything made of clay is fired and glazed first, which takes about three weeks.
-
When is my piece ready, and what does shipping cost?
About three weeks after a ceramics session. Collect it from the studio for nothing, or we post it anywhere in Romania for 35 lei.
-
Can we come as a group?
Yes. Book the four regular workshops individually, or arrange a private group of up to eight people for 1500 lei by emailing hello@ateliersubtei.ro.
-
Can I bring my teenager?
From sixteen, with an adult in the room. The tools are sharp and the kiln is hot, so younger children cannot join a session.
-
How do I find the entrance?
Through the arch on Strada Postăvarului, across the courtyard, past the linden tree, to the low building at the back. First-time visitors usually walk straight past the arch.
